Environmental Services Department - Part-Time Laborer

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Work days will vary from three to five days per week (24-40 hrs.), depending on the needs of the Department. Employee will act as a carrier on a packer truck on designated collection routes, picking up materials including solid waste, yard waste, or working at the recycling center as assigned. Work includes depositing the collected materials into a collection vehicle, and returning containers to prescribed area. Make special collections as assigned. Note variances in customers’ services. Observe surrounding conditions such as citizens, equipment, property, etc. in order to assure that work is conducted in a safe manner. Regulate traffic in hazardous conditions in order to assure safety conditions for the collection personnel and the general public. Wash collection vehicles and other equipment. Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards. Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION: Must be able to read and write.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work, and operate a variety of equipment in the collection of solid waste. Must have the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other City employees.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be in excellent physical condition and be able to withstand extreme weather conditions. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 100 pounds. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, talk, or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
