Dr. Randall Huss Retires From Mercy After Four Decades Caring for Patients

ROLLA, Mo. (March 18, 2025) – After caring for patients in and around Rolla for more than 40 years, Dr. Randall Huss is retiring at the end of this month. To celebrate Dr. Huss’ legacy and the impact he’s made on patients, especially in the senior population, Mercy is hosting a retirement celebration March 31.

“After 43 years of service, Dr. Huss leaves behind a legacy of excellence, compassionate care and unwavering commitment to his patients and the Phelps County community,” said Erik John, operations manager of Mercy Rolla. “His dedication to his patients, colleagues and the community has made a lasting impact that will be felt for years to come.”

Dr. Huss started his career as a family medicine physician in Rolla in 1982 after graduating from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completing a residency at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Once in Rolla, Dr. Huss teamed up with Dr. Ted Smith and Dr. Jim Felts to launch Rolla Family Practice, where Dr. Huss cared for patients both at the beginning and end of their lives.

By the mid-1990s Dr. Huss’ family medicine practice had grown, and in 2001, it was integrated into Mercy. In 2008, Dr. Huss and several other Rolla physicians started the We Care Clinic with the support of Mercy. The clinic cared for underserved and uninsured patients, and later that year, Dr. Huss was awarded Mercy’s Community Service Award for his work at the clinic.

During his career, Dr. Huss served on several subcommittees and boards focused on drafting legislation and regulations that impacted physicians across Missouri. He was also instrumental in founding the Missouri Association of Long-Term Care Practitioners and the Missouri chapter of the American Medical Directors Association (AMDA) in 1991. He served as its president for the first three years and again from 2016 to 2018. In 2004, Dr. Huss received the William Dodd Founder’s Award for distinguished service to AMDA.

Between his long career caring for patients and his dedication to improving and supporting the field of health care, Dr. Huss leaves a powerful legacy at Mercy. Michelle Daniels worked with Dr. Huss for more than 13 years and said his work caring for patients, especially senior patients, was extraordinary. “He profoundly impacted countless lives,” she said. “His compassion, wisdom and unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life for our seniors will be felt for generations to come. It has been an honor to work with Dr. Huss, and I know he will enjoy his well-deserved retirement.”

A farewell celebration honoring Dr. Huss will be held March 31 in the Mercy Rolla boardroom from noon to 2 p.m., and the community is invited to attend.
